Does ChatGPT have dictation?

Yes. ChatGPT dictation is the microphone icon in ChatGPT's message box. OpenAI's Voice Dictation FAQ says pressing it records your voice, sends the audio to OpenAI's models for transcription, and puts the text back in the box so you can edit it before you send. Nothing is sent to the chat until you press send.

The same FAQ says dictation audio is kept for as long as that chat stays in your history, and is deleted within 30 days of you deleting the chat. ChatGPT dictation vs voice mode

ChatGPT dictation turns one recording into text you can edit and send as a normal prompt. ChatGPT Voice is a live spoken conversation where ChatGPT talks back. OpenAI's Voice help page says to use dictation when you want editable text, and that Voice transcripts are not word for word.

Voice has usage limits on a rolling 24-hour window: limited on Free, and 3 hours a day on Go and Plus, according to OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice page, read 18 October 2026. That page also says Voice in the desktop app has separate limits. For writing a long prompt, dictation is the better fit, because you see the words before ChatGPT does.

Is there a ChatGPT dictation shortcut on Mac?

OpenAI's help pages, as we read them on 17 October 2026, don't list a keyboard shortcut for ChatGPT dictation; they describe clicking the microphone icon. The ChatGPT Mac app does have a shortcut for its Chat Bar, a small window you open from any app with Option + Space, and you can change that shortcut in the app's settings. If you want one key that works in ChatGPT and everywhere else, macOS Dictation has its own shortcut (set in System Settings > Keyboard, under Dictation), and Speaky Box works by holding a key, talking and letting go.

ChatGPT dictation not working on Mac

When ChatGPT dictation does nothing on a Mac, start with microphone access. Check these in order:

1. In the browser, allow chatgpt.com to use the microphone when asked. OpenAI's Voice page says: if prompted, allow your browser to access your microphone.
2. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and make sure your browser, or the ChatGPT app, is switched on. Apple explains this on Control access to the microphone on Mac.
3. Open System Settings > Sound > Input, pick the right microphone and watch the input level move as you speak.
4. Quit and reopen the browser or the ChatGPT app after changing a permission.

Is there a ChatGPT dictation time limit?

OpenAI's help pages, as we read them on 17 October 2026, don't publish a time limit for ChatGPT dictation, so we won't guess one. If long ChatGPT dictation recordings fail for you, dictate in shorter pieces and edit the text before sending. ChatGPT Voice, the spoken conversation mode, does have daily usage limits, covered above.

macOS Dictation in ChatGPT

macOS Dictation is free and types into ChatGPT's message box in the Mac app or in Safari and Chrome. Turn it on in System Settings > Keyboard, under Dictation, click in the message box, then press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut. What a spoken ChatGPT prompt looks like

A typical spoken request to ChatGPT, with the goal late and the constraints as asides: "ok so I need a landing page for the app, it's a Mac dictation thing, dark, keep it short, no stock photos, and uh don't use Tailwind, just one HTML file".

A transcript sends that to ChatGPT as it is. The Speaky Box Smart key notices ChatGPT is the app in front and rewrites it as a prompt with the task first, then context, then requirements as a list, then what you want back, as in the demo at the top of this page. That order follows the four-part prompt structure: goal, context, constraints, output.

Tips for dictating to ChatGPT

• Say the goal first, in one sentence, before any background.
• Name the format you want back: a table, a list, one HTML file, three options.
• Say what to leave out ("no stock photos", "no frameworks"). Spoken constraints are the ones people forget to type.
• Put product names, people and code terms in the Speaky Box Words list so they are spelt right every time.
• For quick replies inside a conversation, use the plain Dictate key; save the Smart key for the opening prompt.
