If you’ve searched for Dragon Dictate for Mac or Dragon NaturallySpeaking for Mac, the short answer is that it no longer exists. Nuance discontinued Dragon Professional Individual for Mac in 2018 and hasn’t brought it back. Dragon is Windows only, and if you’re on a Mac you need something else. The good news is that everything else is better than Dragon was.

What Dragon did that you still want

Accurate dictation into any application, a vocabulary you could teach, and voice commands. Modern apps do the first two better with no training at all; the third, controlling your Mac by voice, is now built into macOS as Voice Control (System Settings, Accessibility).

The alternatives

Speaky Box. Hold a key, talk, finished text in any app. Cleanup removes ums and fixes grammar, a Words list handles your terms, and a second key writes a structured prompt in Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Free for 2,000 words a week, £8.99 a month unlimited. Ours.

Wispr Flow. The closest thing to a cross-platform standard: Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android, plus a meeting notetaker. $12 to $15 a month. Comparison.

Superwhisper. Runs locally and offline, which Dragon users who cared about privacy will appreciate. Configurable modes. Comparison.

macOS Dictation and Voice Control. Free. Dictation gives you a transcript; Voice Control gives you the command side of what Dragon did. Together they cover basic use. How to set up dictation.

Dragon Medical is still Windows only. On a Mac, the practical route is a general dictation app plus a thorough vocabulary list of your terms. Speaky Box’s Words list has no limit and applies everywhere. For anything with regulatory requirements, check the provider’s data handling before you rely on it.

What you’ll notice

No training. No headset. No profile to back up. Install, allow the microphone, hold a key. If a term comes out wrong, add it once. Dragon users usually find the first day strange and the second day faster than they ever were.

Prompt like a pro.
